Building Bridges in Songs
A “bridge” in a song is a special section that helps to build up a song before the ending. In this lesson we build some!
Overview
Have you ever been listening to a song when suddenly everything changes… the chords shift, the lyrics take a turn, and the whole chorus feels brand new when it comes back? That’s the power of the bridge.
This handout is more open-ended than most of our earlier lessons. Be sure to consider what type of rhyme scheme you want in each section and feel free to experiment with different numbers of lines in different sections.
Remember, great bridges often elevate the song by recontextualizing or intensifying the themes. They to make that bridge unforgettable!
